Visit Wix

Wix is the website builder to go for if you're looking for absolute drag-and-drop freedom. The classic Wix Editor allows you to place elements anywhere on the page, allowing you to create the exact designs you want.

Building with Wix

Wix is one of the most popular website builders out there. One of its major selling points is the amount of design flexibility that its drag-and-drop editor provides. The classic Wix Editor allows you to create pixel-perfect designs that reflect the unique personality of your brand.

When you're looking into Wix to create your site, keep in mind that it offers two editors – the Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) editor and the classic Wix editor. The main difference is that only the classic editor offers drag and drop functionality, remember that when you see this once you press the button to create your site.

wix choose an editor

The Wix Editor is often referred to as a "true" drag-and-drop site builder – you can drag elements such as text, images, buttons, and galleries from the "Add" menu and drop them anywhere on the page.

Unlike some other drag-and-drop site builders that restrict you to a grid or a predefined layout, Wix gives you complete freedom as to where you want elements to go on a page.

wix editor overview
wix editor add new elements

Of course, with such great power comes great responsibility and if you're not careful, you can make a mess of your site's design. On the plus side, if you get comfortable with the editor, you can create truly stunning and unique designs.

While the Wix Editor is relatively easy to use once you get the hang of it, Wix offers an alternative that's much easier to use. Wix ADI allows you to harness the power of artificial intelligence to build a website with minimal effort.

You lose most of the customization options offered by the classic editor. However, it's straightforward to use and you can always switch to the regular editor if you need to. To find out more about the ADI editor, check out our Wix review.

Another major strength Wix possesses is its vast template library. Regardless of your industry or purpose for creating a website, you're likely to find a great starting point for your design in Wix's vast library of over 500 template designs. Finding the right template for your needs is easy as the templates are neatly sorted into categories and subcategories.

wix templates

Wix's templates are fully customizable. You can change every aspect of a design until it's almost unrecognizable from the original template. If you prefer to start from scratch, you can select a blank template from the list.

The majority of template options look professional and modern. They're also fully responsive and will adjust automatically to fit different screen sizes. You can even edit the mobile version of your site and add mobile-only features if you need to.

A downside of the incredible design freedom and flexibility the Wix Editor offers is that you cannot switch templates once you've begun editing one. So you'll need to make sure to choose a template that suits your needs or you'll have to start from scratch if you move to a different template.

But if we go back to the pros of this builder, Wix also packs a solid array of tools and features to help you build a fully functional website.

If the built-in tools are not enough for you, the Wix App Market contains hundreds of third-party integrations that you can add to your site if necessary.

wix apps

Wix offers robust marketing, SEO, and eCommerce tools that small businesses can easily leverage.

wix seo
wix email marketing

Wix truly excels in the marketing and SEO departments – the tools this builder offers are quite simple to use and understand, making them a great option for beginners in the business sphere.

Pricing

Wix offers a total of 8 plans for you to choose from. Five of these plans are focused on regular professional sites, while the other three are tailored specifically for eCommerce. Here's what the plans have to offer:

  • Free – a very limited plan, mainly suited for testing because it's littered with ads.
  • Combo ($14/month) – excellent pick for portfolios and personal sites.
  • Unlimited ($18/month) – more storage, SEO apps, and advanced analytics.
  • Pro ($23/month) – professional logo and Event Calendar features added.
  • VIP ($39/month) – all of the above features, plus priority customer care.
  • Business Basic ($23/month) – all the main eCommerce features for effortless selling.
  • Business Unlimited ($27/month) – subscription sales, dropshipping, and product review features added.
  • Business VIP ($49/month) – all the features: loyalty program, sales tax calculation, and priority support.

If you're looking into creating a simple personal site, I'd recommend going with the Unlimited plan – it offers SEO apps, making your website appear better on search engines, decent storage, and no Wix ads on your site. Even though it seems alluring, the ads and limited editing on the free drag and drop website builder plan show pretty clearly that this Wix plan is not suitable for anything more than testing. However, if you want to build an online store, either of the Business plans would be good for your business.

Overall, if you're looking for a website builder that'll allow you to quickly create unique, stunning websites, Wix is a superb option to consider.

Pros

  • Extremely flexible drag-and-drop site editor
  • Over 800 beautiful template designs
  • Robust marketing and e-Commerce functionality

Cons

  • You have to buy a premium plan to get rid of the ads

Visit Zyro

Zyro may be the new kid on the block when it comes to drag-and-drop website builders but it packs a one-two punch of simplicity and affordability that makes it a great option to consider.

Building with Zyro

Zyro has been shaping up to be an excellent choice for anyone looking for a website builder that's both simple to use and also very affordable.

Zyro is quite easy to use because the interface is clean and well laid out. Its drag-and-drop editor allows you to easily add elements to your web pages and move them around as you see fit.

You also get a decent array of customization options as you work on putting together a decent-looking site.

zyro customization
zyro sections

Despite being relatively new to the website building space, Zyro already boasts a growing library of over 130 design templates. The variety is decent and the designs aren't bad either. The templates are responsive and mobile-friendly and look modern and minimalistic. They're sorted into different categories including eCommerce, Landing pages, Photography, and Portfolio.

zyro templates

Zyro also packs something else that makes it stand out from the crowd - AI tools.

zyro ai business tools

Zyro's AI Writer tool can help generate professional-looking copy for your site. Of course, you'll have to tweak the results to get what you want but it's a really neat tool for getting started with your sites' content.

zyro ai writer example text

Zyro also offers the Heatmap tool, which predicts what sections of your site will get the most traffic and helps you tweak your design to increase conversions and offer a better user experience.

zyro ai heatmap

If you need a professional logo for your site, you can make one pretty quickly and quite easily using Zyro's AI Logo Maker tool. Zyro also gives you a free image resizer tool that lets you quickly resize images for use on the internet.

zyro ai logo generator

There's also an AI business name generator, a slogan maker tool, and a blog title generator. If you want to read more about different AI tools, check out our list of best AI website builders.

When it comes to its blogging tool, however, Zyro's offering isn't one of the more robust or intuitive options out there.

zyro blog post editor

It's… fine, but nothing special – I can't recommend it if you're planning to use a website for blogging and blogging only.

On the plus side, Zyro's eCommerce capabilities are quite good. You get most of the features and tools you need to start and manage an online store.

zyro ecommerce

Psst… More information on Zyro's eCommerce features can be found in our Zyro review...

Pricing

Let's take a look at Zyro's premium plans, as they're the major reason why this website builder is worth a second look:

  • Basic ($2.61/month) – 1 GB of storage, AI tools
  • Unleashed ($1.71/month) – unlimited storage, visitor live chat, embed code
  • eCommerce ($8.01/month) – unlimited storage, 100 products, visitors remarketing
  • eCommerce Plus ($13.41/month) – unlimited storage, unlimited products

Even though I'll spoil you the fun of reading this article as a whole, I have to say – Zyro is the cheapest drag and drop website builder on the list.

Now, with plans as ridiculously low as these, your first thought might be: "what's the catch?" Well, aside from the fact that you have to commit for a long time to get these prices, there isn't any major deal breaker that ruins the experience.

If you can't decide which plan to choose, I can confidently say that if you're not looking for eCommerce functionality and you're not planning to flood your site with pictures or videos, stick with the Basic plan. Unleashed is pretty good if, for instance, you want to create a portfolio site. eCommerce and eCommerce Plus plans are worthy looking into if you want an online store only.

On the whole, Zyro is an easy-to-use, affordable website builder with an array of unique tools and features. If you're looking to build a website with minimal investment of time and money, it might just be the right tool for the job.

Squarespace is a great section-based website builder with beautiful templates and a solid array of marketing tools and features. It's an excellent choice for artists and creative professionals looking to create stunning websites.

Building with Squarespace

If you want to create a sleek, modern website but lack faith in your design abilities, Squarespace is the right website builder for you. Squarespace gives you access to a library containing over 110 beautiful templates with minimalistic designs.

squarespace templates

The templates feature bold typography, clean fonts, and plenty of white space. It's not a surprise that because of these features they work well for photography sites and online stores. The templates are sorted into categories, making it easy to find one that suits your needs.

Squarespace templates are also responsive and look great on mobile devices – you can check how they look on different screens in the editor. These templates are fully customizable and you can make the designs your own in the Squarespace editor.

squarespace site color selection

Squarespace gives you a decent amount of customization options. Squarespace isn't like a traditional drag and drop builder – you drop sections and blocks into your page, but they do have to follow a predetermined grid. But that doesn't mean that your hands are tied – you can add and delete sections, change color schemes, replace images, and reorder the layout of a page.

squarespace new editor interface

The webpages are made up of sections, which contain content blocks such as buttons, images, text, and other elements.

One advantage of the section-based approach is that unlike Wix and some other website builders, Squarespace allows you to switch templates even after your site has gone live. It's also much more difficult to mess things up since everything is nicely structured.

When it comes to tools and features, Squarespace offers some of the best options out there. Their blogging tool, for example, is nicely fleshed out and offers decent SEO optimization.

Squarespace is also a good option for creating eCommerce sites. It has a lot of beautiful templates curated specifically for online stores. Also, most of the features you'll need, such as Google Analytics, are already integrated.

Squarespace also offers an email marketing platform - Email Campaigns, which allows you to easily connect with your audience and packs some advanced email marketing features.

In addition to its excellent in-house tools and features, Squarespace offers an app store - Squarespace Extensions - with 24 third-party integrations. While the number of apps offered isn't the largest, they are all professionally made and nicely curated, meaning that you won't have to worry about your purchased app being a dud.

squarespace extensions

Pricing

Squarespace doesn't have a forever-free plan, but it offers a 14-day free trial for you to play around and see if this builder truly is for you. Here are the plans that Squarespace offers:

  • Personal ($12/month) – free custom domain, unlimited bandwidth, and storage
  • Business ($18/month) – advanced analytics and eCommerce with a 3% fee
  • Basic Commerce ($26/month) – full CSS/HTML and Java customization, professional emails, no fee for eCommerce
  • Advanced Commerce ($40/month) – selling subscriptions and abandoned cart recovery

For a simple personal website, I'd recommend you to go with the cheapest plan – the Personal plan.

But, if you're looking into building an online store, stray away from the Business plan and scale up to either Basic or Advanced Commerce. The Business plan has a 3% transaction fee, which means that you'll have to pay additional money to Squarespace after every transaction. And giving away money isn't the best business practice, now is it?

Overall, if you're looking to create a nice-looking website for your personal or business needs, you can't go wrong with Squarespace.

4. SITE123 - the quick and easy way to build a website

Visit SITE123

SITE123 is a super simple online website builder with an intuitive editor that allows you to put together a website in minutes. It offers responsive design templates and excellent customer support.

Building with SITE123

SITE123 isn't your regular website builder – it's designed to help you get your website up and running as quickly and intuitively as possible. The idea is that you can build a website in three simple steps - answer a few questions, add your content, and publish.

Once you press the huge "Get started" button, you're greeted with this:

site123 what type of website

After this question, you're asking a few following personal questions and then transported to your website's editor. The whole process was extremely fast and truly as simple as 1, 2, 3.

However, due to its focus on simplicity, SITE123's editor doesn't give you traditional drag-and-drop flexibility. Instead, you can add pre-designed content blocks to your page and edit them quickly and easily.

site123 layout options
site123 adding sections pages

While it limits your creative freedom, it's way easier and perfect for building simple sites.

Of course, if you need more leeway with your site's design, you might find SITE123 to be rather restrictive. It's a great option to go for if you're looking to go fast but it's not ideal for implementing detailed and unique designs.

Since you only get limited customization options, you'll have to select a template that best matches your design ideas. Fortunately, SITE123 gives you a decent array of options to choose from.

site123 templates

There are over 180 template designs in the template library. The designs are responsive and mobile-friendly and look modern and professional.

When it comes to eCommerce and marketing, SITE123 allows you to build a simple online store with very little hassle.

For instance, I recommend you to utilize the SEO Advisor that SITE123 offers – it analyses your website and gives you information on what could be improved.

site123 seo checker

The tool is simple, but it gets the job done. To see what the SITE123 Seo Adviser can do to its fullest, check out our SITE123 review.

The platform also features an easy-to-use newsletter tool that allows you to send up to 10,000 messages depending on what plan you get.

site123 email marketing

Other notable features of SITE123 are its support for multi-language sites and excellent customer support – they offer 24/7 customer care, and you can contact them via live chat, email, or a phone line.

Now, if you looked through these features and still feel like something's missing, there's also an app market with a decent selection of third-party integrations.

site123 app market

Definitely look around and implement whatever's missing into your site, you won't be disappointed.

Pricing

In terms of pricing, SITE123 offers one free plan and four paid ones:

  • Basic ($12.80/month) – 10 GB of storage, eCommerce functionality
  • Advanced ($19.80/month) – 30 GB of storage, no ads, mailbox
  • Professional ($28.80/month) – 90 GB of storage, 5 mailboxes
  • Gold ($34.80/month) – 270 GB of storage, 10 mailboxes

I think that the pricing of SITE123 is a bit off – to get the ability to choose Advanced, Professional, or Gold, you have to be an existing customer of SITE123. And while I want to recommend you to try out the Advanced plan, you'd have to purchase Basic first.

As for further recommendations, the Basic and Advanced plans are more ideal for simple personal websites while the Professional and Gold plans are better suited to business websites with eCommerce functionality. Not to mention, all premium plans give you a free domain for the first year.

Overall, if you're looking for a quick and easy way to build your website, SITE123 is the ideal tool for the job.

Elementor isn't a standalone website builder. Rather, it's a visual drag-and-drop plugin for WordPress websites. It's very popular among WordPress users and for good reason - it makes designing a website with WordPress a breeze.

Building with Elementor

WordPress is one of the most popular platforms used for building websites today. However, it lacks a simple drag-and-drop site builder interface that anyone can use to customize their site's design. Fortunately, drag-and-drop page builder plugins for WordPress exist and Elementor is one of the more popular options.

elementor starting page

Elementor gives you a website builder interface with a ton of elements and widgets such as text, buttons, titles, images, and maps that you can drag and drop onto your web pages. You can also insert native WordPress widgets from the toolbar on the left of the editor interface.

elementor editor

In addition to individual elements and widgets, Elementor gives you access to pre-designed content blocks for commonly used sections of websites such as testimonials, portfolios, and contact forms. You can also create your templates if you need to reuse a content block across different pages.

elementor content blocks

Elementor's drag-and-drop editor gives you a lot of control over the look and feel of your site. You can adjust almost every detail of the elements and content blocks to get your design looking just how you want it. The toolbar on the left can be used to fine-tune the colors, font, layout, and spacing of elements on the page.

elementor adjustments

If you don't want to start your page designs from scratch, Elementor has you covered with its template library, which contains over 30 free templates and 300+ more templates if you upgrade to one of the Elementor Pro plans.

elementor templates

Elementor makes it easy to preview the mobile version of your site from the drag-and-drop editor. You also get the ability to restrict widgets to only show up on certain devices. Thus, you can carefully tweak your site's design to ensure that it looks and works great on any device.

Another handy feature Elementor offers is its History panel, which lets you see and undo previous actions under the Actions tab or revert to an earlier version of your page.

Since Elementor gives you a good amount of design freedom, you'll probably find yourself using this feature from time to time.

And if you're curious about what WordPress can do on its own without the help of this plugin, check out our WordPress review.

Pricing

When it comes to pricing, Elementor offers a really good free plan that gives you access to over 40 basic widgets, 30+ page templates, and full access to the drag-and-drop builder. You can create as many sites as you want with the free plan.

But, the premium plans are where it's at. Here are the prices:

  • Essential ($49/year) – 1 pro website, 90+ basic and pro widgets, 300+ templates
  • Advanced ($99/year) – 3 pro websites, 60+ pro website kits
  • Expert ($199/year) – 25 pro websites, 20 expert website kits, Elementor expert profile
  • Studio ($499/year) – 100 pro websites, Elementor expert profile, VIP support
  • Agency ($999/year) – 1000 pro websites, Elementor expert profile, VIP support

The prices might seem scary, but keep in mind that that's the price for a year, not a month. If you're looking into creating a website for yourself, you won't need anything more than the Free plan or the Essential plan.

Also, remember that since Elementor is a WordPress plugin, you'll have to pay for WordPress domain and hosting – keep that in mind when budgeting.

All in all, Elementor is a capable website builder plugin that anyone can use to build professional-looking websites without much hassle. It's an excellent option to consider if you're looking for an easier way to build websites using WordPress.

GoDaddy Website Builder is a section-based website builder that's ideal for individuals and businesses looking to build websites quickly and easily. It packs a nice selection of easy-to-use tools and features for small businesses.

Building with GoDaddy

GoDaddy's website builder offering is another great option to consider if you're looking for the easiest path to building a website for your personal or business needs. It's remarkably easy to use but also has some design and customization limitations.

When you first create your website, you'll be asked to select from a couple of recommended themes. GoDaddy has a decent library of relatively good-looking and responsive templates that are based on about 22 themes.

godaddy templates

Even after you've chosen a template, you can switch between the available themes to change the look of your site's pages. Here's a feel of what the builder offers to you while editing:

godaddy templates in the builder

GoDaddy's website builder works similarly to Squarespace and other section-based platforms. You can add pre-designed blocks of content to your pages and customize the look and feel of these sections.

However, the style customizations available are quite limited. You cannot create custom sections or move elements around in a section. You can, however, reorder sections and change the layout of a page.

The thread of simplicity and ease-of-use also runs through GoDaddy's business-focused tools and features. The integrated eCommerce offering is easy to get started with:

GoDaddy also offers capable yet intuitive tools for SEO, social media marketing, and email marketing.

I left the best for last – if you're looking for a place to build your business website, you should consider GoDaddy just because of its amazing InSight tool.

I could go about this tool for hours – it's incredible for both beginners and experienced people in the business field. Basically, in your GoDaddy dashboard, at all times, you'll have an opportunity to select what goals matter to you the most.

godaddy builder insight setup

The selection of these goals is a part of the InSight tool – depending on them, you'll get a list of things that you have to do.

After you're done completing the checklist, your website will receive a score. InSight compares your business to others with similar goals and rates you from 1 to 100. Now, don't laugh at me for my score – I'm only here for writing, not for creating a successful business…

...but this tool is extremely helpful if you're starting out and not sure on what to focus on. After finishing your checklist, InSight gives you instructions on how to reach your further goals and then keeps track of how you're doing. I think that solely because of this tool, I can say that GoDaddy is the best eCommerce drag and drop website builder on this list. And if this intrigues you, our GoDaddy review has an entire section dedicated to this tool.

Pricing

Speaking of plans – GoDaddy offers a simple pricing structure consisting of one free and four premium plans:

  • Basic ($6.99/month) – guidance, and analytics
  • Standard ($10.49/month) – one-time appointments, SEO optimization
  • Premium ($13.99/month) – one-time group events, connect an unlimited amount of social media networks, receive payments for appointments
  • Ecommerce ($17.49/month) – full eCommerce features – product listings, discounts, and promotional features

As for recommendations, if you want a simple personal site, you'll be good to go with the Basic plan. The Standard and Premium plans are great if you're looking into making a site for a small business that's not planning on selling online. Check out the Ecommerce plan if you need full eCommerce functionality – that's the only plan that offers it.

Overall, GoDaddy's offers a super intuitive and focused design experience, so if that's what you're looking for, definitely consider GoDaddy a primary option.

Weebly is one of the more popular drag-and-drop website builders and has been around for some time now. It's easy to use and packs plenty of stylish and responsive themes.

Building with Weebly

Weebly is an excellent drag-and-drop website builder that's also very easy to use.

In order to start using Weebly, choose the option for a "Website", or a "Personal website". The "Online Store" option will direct you to Square – an entirely different platform with different website-building capabilities.

weebly choose website option

After that, you have to choose a template that resembles your desired end product the most. For that, Weebly offers a decent library of responsive and modern design themes.

weebly templates

You can customize these themes to suit your design preferences. However, you'll have to grapple with some frustrating limitations such as a lack of precise control over how colors get applied.

On the plus side, you can actually edit the source code to modify some elements of the templates.

weebly code editor

You can also switch between themes whenever you like – even after your site goes live.

Now, about the editor. The editor works just as you'd expect a drag-and-drop site editor to function. You can drag elements and sections from the pane on the left onto the page and place them wherever you want. You can then click on the elements to customize their settings within the page.

weebly editor

The editor's interface is modular and parts of it show up when you need them. For instance, you can't select a section's layout before you place it on your page – that is done after choosing where the section block is going to be.

weebly choose section layout

This helps to keep the interface from becoming a cluttered nightmare. There's barely any learning curve with this platform as the design process is pretty straightforward and intuitive.

Now, if you're looking into building an online store with Weebly, I think that this website builder is a pretty good option for small businesses.

The entire dashboard of the eCommerce store is easy to understand, and simple to follow.

weebly ecommerce adding product

You can add pre-designed sections to your page and make limited customizations.

weebly ecommerce layout

Since Weebly's eCommerce is powered by Square, it packs most of the features you'd expect from an integrated eCommerce solution. You get help with managing your inventory, taxes, invoices, and analytics. It's a decent solution for small to medium-sized online stores – take a look at our Weebly review and see it for yourself.

Weebly in itself could be… a little too simple, so there is a huge need for additional apps. The key features are in the builder itself, but for anything more than that, Weebly offers an app store called the App Center. It features a mix of free and paid apps that let you add functionality to your website.

weebly app center

There's a decent variety of options to choose from across different categories including eCommerce, Marketing, Communication, and Social. Some useful apps include Simple Table, Accordion, and Multilanguage.

weebly apps

So if you find yourself missing one feature or another, pay a visit to the App Center – you won't be disappointed.

Pricing

Weebly's pricing plans are pretty straightforward. There are three paid plans as well as a forever-free plan that's remarkably generous. Let's see what the plans have to offer:

  • Free – Website on Weebly's subdomain, Weebly ads, 500MB storage
  • Connect ($5/month) – connect personal domain, free SSL security, basic marketing features
  • Pro ($12/month) – Weebly ads removed, unlimited storage, advanced site-building features, eCommerce (25 items, 3% transaction fee)
  • Business ($25/month) – unlimited items, no transaction fee, advanced eCommerce insights
  • Business Plus ($38/month) – a real-time shipping calculator, abandoned cart emails

Of course, the premium plans are more ideal as they let you add a custom domain name. The Connect plan, however, still shows a Weebly ad in the footer just like the free plan. Honestly, I'd recommend scaling up to the Pro plan if you need a website for serious personal or business purposes.

Overall, Weebly is an easy website builder to recommend to anyone looking to start a website. It's easy to use and offers nice-looking themes that pair well with mobile devices. It also has decent eCommerce abilities and a lot of additional integrations.

Difference between drag and drop and section-based editors

While reading about individual editors you probably noticed two phrases appearing here and there – drag and drop and section-based. What's the difference between these two types of editors?

Traditional drag and drop website builder

Drag and drop website builders, in simple words, allow anyone with a computer and internet connection to effortlessly create a website. These builders don't require any experience in coding – they allow you to add predetermined elements to your site by selecting them and dragging them to the place you want them to be. Usually, the elements you can add are similar to the following:

  • Text
  • Buttons
  • Images and galleries
  • Videos
  • Slideshows
  • Forms
  • Structural elements (background images, spaces, headings, menus)

Creating a website with a drag and drop builder takes very little time – your website can be ready in just a few hours. And all of that can be done with little to no experience in web development.

Section-based website builders

Section-based website builders are extremely similar to drag and drop builders in several ways:

  • You can add predetermined elements
  • You can create a website with no web development skills
  • You can create a website very quickly and effortlessly

So what's the main difference?

Section-based editors are more limited. When creating a website with an editor like that, you'll notice that you can only add elements in certain places. This has both pros and cons: while you can't let your creative juices flow freely, you can be certain that the end product of your website will be very neat and structured.
